A noted Italian geologist and paleontologist; Stoppani (1824-1891) published extensively on the paleontology and geology of Italy, especially the Alpine regions. He has collaborated with Negri and Mercalli who are also noted Italian geologists to produce these two works. In the first, Stoppani and Negri describe the stratigraphy, structural geology and paleontology of Italy. In the second work, Mercalli describes the volcanism and seismicity of Italy and provides details on the most prominent eruptions and earthquakes.
