The maps are loose and in a large folder. All of the maps are free of staining and have bright colors. The outer margins are lightly toned. Over all the maps are in very good condition.
George Woolworth Colton (1827-1901) was an American cartographer and the son of the cartographer Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893). The elder Colton headed J. H. Colton and Company and began publishing maps in New York in the 1830s. The Colton firm was one of the primary publishers of guidebooks, immigrant maps, and railroad maps. In 1857 G. W. Colton issued his "Colton's General Atlas of the World." Colton refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the inexpensive domestic market. All maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time.
Colton's General Atlas differs from his World Atlas and American Atlas in that the maps are not printed within decorative borders but with ruled borders, and the descriptive text is printed on the verso of the maps. The atlas maps were the finest and most accurate of the period. The list of maps offered include:
