Horwood (1877-1960) was a British geologist and mineralogist. He received his education at the University of London and spent nearly his entire career in South Africa where he studied the precious metal deposits of the Witwatersrand. Through the course of his career he was to become a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, an associate of the Royal School of Mines in London and a member of the Geological Society of South Africa. His research and work led to some of the first systematic studies of the major gold deposits of the Rand. Much of that research appears in “The Gold Deposits of the Rand”. The book contains detailed important facts and statistics about the gold deposits of the Rand and their mineralogy, as well as the extraction methods and processes. He includes one of the first detailed studies of the rare metals in the “banket” as well as a "Statement of Rand Ore Reserves" for particular gold mines. Discussions with other prominent mining geologists are included; Stephen J. Lett, F.H. Hatch, Kirby Thomas, H. Foster Bain, David Draper, T.A. Rickard, E.T. Mellor, Waldemar Lindgren, J.W. Gregory and J.F. Kemp.
