The Cripple Creek District remains one of the most famous gold districts in the world. The Cripple Creek gold deposits, discovered in 1891, and the USGS geologists Cross and Penrose, completed an initial survey in 1894. The comprehensive survey on which the above professional paper is based was carried out by Lindgren and Ramsone. The USGS geologists and crews completed new topographic surveys, updated and resurveyed the geology, stratigraphy and ore deposits and completed a thorough study of the extensive mine workings opened since the earlier survey. The study remains a classic work on the origins, and occurrences of gold deposits.
