The work is complete and in a 19th century cloth with gilt titles. The binding is tight and clean. Canceled book plate of AMNH on end sheet, rubber stamp on title page and upper edge of plates. Inscribed by noted American conchologist William Cooper (1798-1864) to the New York Lyceum Natural History, an institution he helped found. In very good condition.
A French theologian and naturalist, Chaubard (1785-1854) was a member of the French Expedition de Moree and traveled extensively throughout the Mediterranean region. His geological observations during his travels and ideas are recorded in the above work. Chaubard describes geological features, the formation of the earth and relates this to known historical facts, the bible, and early Egyptian and Greek history and folklore. This is his earliest published work.
