Thureau was an Australian mining engineer and on the faculty of the Bendigo School of Mines. He was commissioned a delegate of California to study the gold mining operations there and in Nevada. It was hoped that the gold mining methods observed could be used in the newly discovered fields in Australia. Part one of his study covers the mining operations in California, part 2 covers the mining operations of Nevada and an appendix covers wages paid, mining laws, minerals and ores observed and mine timbering.
