The work is complete and in a contemporary half calf over marbled boards with gilt spine titles and gilt ruled panels and edges. Marbled text block edges and end sheets. Stamp and withdrawal stamp of the Library of Congress on title page and LOC book plate on paste down. Front inner hinge previously re-enforced. Outer edge of one marbled end sheet lightly chipped. Text lightly toned and folded maps clean and bright. In very good condition with all the maps present.

The prominent geologist Sir Roderick I. Murchison was the President of the Royal Geographical Society in 1858. His address to the Society appears at the start of this volume. He devotes much of his lengthy address to the advancements of the knowledge on the geography and geology of various regions including India, China and Africa. The seventeen papers in this volume cover the exploration of parts of Australia, New Zealand, China, Greenland,Africa and other regions. These include: The Journal of the North Australian Exploring expedition under Gregory, Robert Moffat on Southern Africa (Little Namaqualand Eastward), Burton and Speke on East Africa Expedition, Rink on Kane's Arctic explorations. All of the folded maps are present.
